COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Another individual has been found guilty in connection with a murder case that remained unsolved for four years in Cobb County.
Conviction of Dontavian Jones
On June 14, Dontavian Jones, aged 22, was convicted in the 2016 murder of Dewenzell Spence, a 41-year-old individual. The Cobb County District Attorney’s Office announced that Jones was found guilty of multiple charges including murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Discovery of the Crime
On June 3, 2016, Cobb County police responded to a report of a deceased male discovered in the woods of a private property in Mableton. The body, identified as Spence, was highly decomposed. Spence, an employee at Hormel Foods who relied on MARTA for commuting, raised concerns when he did not use his MARTA card or show up for work on May 31, 2016.
Investigation and Breakthrough
Detectives delved into Spence’s bank account records and identified two withdrawals. Surveillance footage captured Spence at an ATM for a considerable period with two unidentified males and a white van in the vicinity. One of the males had his face concealed while the other did not, leading to a dead end initially.
Identification and Arrest
In January 2020, detectives utilised facial recognition technology to identify the unmasked suspect as Terrance Marshall from Cochran. Marshall had been apprehended on June 1, 2016, following a high-speed chase in Alabama involving a vehicle akin to the one seen in the ATM footage. Jones was also involved in the chase. Subsequent investigations confirmed Marshall and Jones as the individuals in the ATM footage.
Details of the Crime
Investigations revealed that Jones, aged 14 at the time, fled Cochran with Marshall’s assistance due to an outstanding murder warrant dated May 25, 2016. They encountered Spence in Atlanta, held him at gunpoint, and coerced him into a stolen van. After driving him to Mableton, they forced Spence to withdraw $50 from his bank account before executing him in a wooded area where his body was eventually discovered.
Judicial Outcome
Marshall faced trial and was convicted in January 2024, receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole along with an additional five years of imprisonment. Jones is scheduled for sentencing on July 15.
