MESQUITE, Texas – A Waco resident, Davonta Mathis, aged 21, has been taken into custody in connection with a tragic shooting incident that occurred in Mesquite last Thursday. Mathis faces charges of evading arrest with a vehicle and capital murder.

The Mesquite Police Department received a distressing 911 call at approximately 11:00 p.m. on June 20, reporting a shooting at a business located in the 1700 block of West Bruton Road. According to reports, Mathis entered the establishment and opened fire.

Upon the arrival of law enforcement officers at the scene, they discovered a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim, identified as 60-year-old Muhammad Hussain from Carrollton, was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Two days following the shooting, on June 22, an alert police officer spotted Mathis and initiated a pursuit in a bid to apprehend him. Shortly thereafter, Mathis was successfully apprehended and charged in connection with the fatal shooting incident.

The authorities in Mesquite are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, as they strive to bring justice to the victim and closure to his loved ones.
