Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Callie Weems, a 23-year-old new mother, was tragically killed in a shooting at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas. Weems, who had a 10-month-old daughter named Ivy, was described as a loving and devoted mother by her own mother, Helen Browning, 53.

The heartbreaking incident took place on Friday, when a gunman identified as 44-year-old Travis Eugene Posey opened fire at the Mad Butcher store, resulting in four fatalities and injuring 11 others, including the alleged shooter. Weems was among those fatally wounded, as she bravely tried to help another victim during the chaos.

Selfless Act of Bravery

According to Arkansas State Police Director Mike Hagar, Weems, who worked as a nurse, displayed immense courage by assisting another gunshot victim instead of fleeing the store. Her selfless act of bravery was praised by authorities during a news conference.

The tragic event marked at least the third mass shooting at a U.S. grocery store in recent years, following similar incidents in Buffalo and Boulder.

Details of the Shooting

Posey, the alleged gunman, was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, a pistol, and extra ammunition. He indiscriminately fired at customers and employees both inside and outside the store, causing chaos and panic among the shoppers.

Law enforcement officers quickly responded to the scene and engaged in a shootout with Posey, ultimately apprehending him and preventing further harm.

Community in Mourning

The tight-knit community of Fordyce was left reeling from the tragic shooting, with residents expressing shock and fear in the aftermath. City council member Roderick Rogers described the scene as resembling a “war zone” and highlighted the ongoing concerns for the victims still in hospital.

He emphasised the need for increased safety measures to reassure frightened residents and prevent future incidents.

Remembering the Victims

In addition to Callie Weems, the other victims of the shooting were identified as Roy Sturgis, Shirley Taylor, and Ellen Shrum. Each of them was remembered fondly by their loved ones, with Sturgis being described as a devoted father and Taylor as a pillar of her family.

The wounded individuals, ranging in age from 20 to 65, continue to receive medical treatment, with one woman in critical condition.

Justice and Healing

Travis Eugene Posey is currently in custody and will face multiple charges, including four counts of capital murder. As the community mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy, the focus remains on seeking justice for the victims and their families.

Despite the senseless violence, the resilience and unity of the Fordyce community shine through as they come together to support each other in this difficult time.
