Pune: The body of an 11-year-old boy was discovered on Friday on a farm in Dahiwadi village of Shirur tehsil. The victim, identified as Yash Gaikwad, is believed to have been attacked by a leopard.
A forest department official stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed upon receipt of the forensic laboratory report. Authorities have registered a case of accidental death, and cages have been set up by the forest department in and around Dahiwadi to capture the big cat. Thermal drones are also being deployed to track the leopard.
Assistant inspector Keshav Wabale from the Shikrapur police station revealed that the boy had gone to the field to relieve himself. Concern arose when he did not return home, prompting his family and the forest department to initiate a search operation. Gaikwad’s body was eventually located in a sugar cane farm.
According to forest department officials, there were no clear indications of a leopard attack. “The boy had a deep wound at the back of his skull and a scratch on his nose, but these are isolated injuries without multiple claw marks and teeth wounds. Additionally, no pug marks were found on the farm, although they were discovered in an adjacent field,” a forest official explained.
Authorities continue to investigate the tragic incident as the community mourns the loss of the young boy. The forest department remains vigilant in monitoring the area and ensuring the safety of residents.
