Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A suspect believed to be involved in an armed robbery on Saturday led law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase from Woodworth to the outskirts of Alexandria. The suspect reportedly fired shots at Rapides Parish Sheriff’s deputies before eventually shooting himself in the head, as stated in a news release.

The individual, who has not been publicly identified, was rushed to a hospital following the incident. However, the sheriff’s office has not provided an update on the suspect’s condition at this time.

The tense situation unfolded at around 4:37 p.m. when a convenience store at the intersection of La. Highway 121 and La. Highway 465 in the Sieper area was targeted in an armed robbery. The perpetrator fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Despite the initial chaos, law enforcement officials were able to gather crucial information and positively identify both the suspect and the vehicle involved. This intelligence was swiftly shared with other agencies, leading to a Woodworth Police Department officer spotting the suspect’s vehicle heading north on U.S. Highway 165.

Efforts to Apprehend the Suspect

Upon spotting the suspect, a Woodworth Police Department officer attempted to pull over the vehicle. However, the driver refused to stop and instead turned onto Horseshoe Drive in Alexandria, embarking on a dangerous journey towards Twin Bridges Road. As the suspect evaded capture, more deputies and officers from the Alexandria Police Department joined the pursuit.

Spike strips were deployed near McKeithen Drive in an attempt to halt the suspect’s progress. In response, the suspect opened fire at the pursuing deputies, striking at least one vehicle in the process.

Despite the exchange of gunfire, the suspect managed to evade capture and continued fleeing along Twin Bridges Road until coming to a stop near Messina Road. The sheriff’s office reported that the suspect was seen brandishing a firearm as deputies attempted to negotiate his surrender. Tragically, the suspect ultimately turned the gun on himself, causing a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Current Investigation

Following the incident, deputies provided immediate medical assistance to the injured suspect until Acadian Ambulance personnel arrived to transport him to a hospital for further treatment. Detectives and crime scene investigators are currently on-site, spanning the area from McKeithen Drive to Messina Road. The public is advised to avoid the vicinity to allow authorities to conduct their investigation.
