LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Tragedy struck in Arkansas as a fourth victim has died following a shooting at a grocery store, which left nine others wounded and cars riddled with bullet holes. The incident caused panic among bystanders who scrambled for cover.

The Arkansas state police confirmed the death of the fourth victim on Saturday evening, bringing the total number of people hit by gunfire to 14, including 11 civilians, two law enforcement officers, and the suspect.

The deceased individuals were identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Callie Weems, 23, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81, all of whom were civilians, according to the police statement.

Among the wounded, ranging in age from 20 to 65, four individuals remain hospitalized, including a woman in critical condition. The injured officers were identified as Fordyce Police Officer James Johnson, 31, who has been released from the hospital, and Stuttgart Police Officer John Hudson, 24, whose injuries were described as minor.

The suspect, Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg, is set to face four counts of capital murder. After exchanging gunfire with law enforcement, Posey received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into police custody and transferred to the Ouachita County Detention Center.

Motive and Legal Proceedings

The police have not disclosed a motive for the shooting. A media briefing to provide updates on the incident is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday. It remains unclear whether Posey has legal representation, with no information available on an attorney for him at this time.

The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a small city located 65 miles south of Little Rock. Roderick Rogers, a city council member, described the chaotic scene as people sought refuge in nearby establishments, including a hospital.

Social media footage captured the aftermath, showing individuals lying in the parking lot and the sound of multiple gunshots echoing. The store’s windows displayed numerous bullet holes, with spent shell casings scattered across the parking lot.

Previous Incidents

This tragic event adds to the list of mass shootings that have taken place in grocery stores in recent years. In 2022, a white supremacist killed 10 Black individuals at a Buffalo supermarket, following a similar incident in Boulder, Colorado, where 10 people were fatally shot at a supermarket just over a year prior.

Law enforcement agencies at the local and state levels responded swiftly to the shooting, with medical helicopters arriving at the scene. The community in Fordyce is reeling from the senseless violence that has left multiple families shattered.
