Tragedy struck at an Arkansas grocery store as a shooter opened fire, resulting in the death of a fourth person a day after the incident. The shooting left nine others wounded and cars riddled with bullet holes as panicked bystanders sought cover.

On Saturday night, Arkansas state police confirmed the death of the fourth victim, bringing the total number of people hit by gunfire to 14. Among the victims were 11 civilians, two law enforcement officers, and the suspect.

The deceased individuals were identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Callie Weems, 23, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81 – all civilians, according to the official statement released by the authorities.

The wounded individuals, ranging in age from 20 to 65, were being treated at local hospitals. Four individuals remained hospitalized, including a woman in critical condition.

Suspect Identified and Charged

The suspect in the shooting was identified as Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg. He will face four counts of murder in connection with the tragic incident. Posey sustained non-life-threatening injuries during an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officers and was subsequently taken into police custody.

Authorities confirmed that Posey had been released from medical treatment and transferred to the Ouachita County Detention Centre. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown at this time.

Eye Witness Account

Roderick Rogers, a member of the city council, recounted the chaos that ensued following the shooting. Employees at his nearby restaurant alerted him to the incident, prompting him to contact the sheriff. Upon arriving at the scene, Rogers observed individuals fleeing in all directions, with some even seeking refuge at a nearby hospital.

Video footage shared on social media depicted a person lying in the parking lot, while other clips captured the sound of multiple gunshots. Reporters on-site documented numerous bullet holes in the store’s windows and shell casings scattered across the parking lot.

Community Response

The shooting at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, located 104km south of Little Rock, has left the community in shock. This incident marks another tragic episode of gun violence, following a similar mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo in 2022, where ten Black individuals were killed by a white supremacist.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the community mourns the loss of the victims and prays for the recovery of those injured.
