Authorities have confirmed that a fourth victim has tragically passed away following a shooting at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas. The incident, which occurred on Friday morning, left a total of 11 civilians, two law enforcement officers, and the suspect injured.
The shooting took place at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce at around 11.30am local time. The victims who lost their lives have been identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Callie Weems, 23, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81, all of whom were civilians. The injured individuals, ranging in age from 20 to 65, are currently receiving medical treatment, with four remaining in hospital and one woman in critical condition.
Among the injured were Fordyce police officer James Johnson, 31, who has since been released from hospital, and Stuttgart police officer John Hudson, 24, whose injuries were described as minor.
The suspect, who exchanged gunfire with law enforcement during the incident, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into police custody and transferred to the Ouachita County Detention Centre.
Roderick Rogers, a member of the city council, recounted the chaos that unfolded following the shooting. He was alerted by employees at his nearby restaurant and arrived to find people fleeing in all directions, with some even running to the nearby hospital for safety.
Social media footage captured the harrowing scene, showing individuals seeking shelter and multiple gunshots ringing out. Images from reporters on the scene revealed bullet holes in the shop’s windows and shell casings scattered throughout the car park.
