LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Following a tragic incident at a grocery store in Arkansas, police have confirmed that a fourth victim has tragically passed away. The shooter opened fire at the store, causing chaos and leaving nine others wounded. The incident also resulted in several cars being riddled with bullet holes as bystanders frantically sought cover.

Arkansas state police released a statement revealing that a total of 14 individuals were hit by gunfire during the shooting. This includes 11 civilians, two law enforcement officers, and the suspect. The deceased victims have been identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Callie Weems, 23, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81, all of whom were civilians.

Those wounded in the attack range in age from 20 to 65, with four individuals still in hospital, one of whom is in critical condition. The injured law enforcement officers were identified as Fordyce Police Officer James Johnson, 31, who has since been discharged from the hospital, and Stuttgart Police Officer John Hudson, 24, whose injuries were reported to be minor.

Suspect and Charges

The suspect behind the shooting has been named as Travis Eugene Posey, 44, from New Edinburg. He will face four counts of capital murder in connection with the incident. Following an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement, Posey received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into police custody. He is currently being held at the Ouachita County Detention Center.

Motive Unclear

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting. A media briefing is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday to provide further updates on the investigation. As of the latest information available, it is unclear whether Posey has legal representation.

The Shooting

The shooting occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a small city located 65 miles south of Little Rock. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos and panic as people scrambled for safety in the aftermath of the shooting.

Local officials, including Roderick Rogers, a member of the city council, were quick to respond to the incident. Rogers described a scene of people fleeing in all directions, with some even seeking refuge at a nearby hospital.

Previous Incidents

This tragic event is the latest in a series of mass shootings that have taken place in supermarket settings. In recent years, similar incidents have occurred, including a white supremacist attack that claimed the lives of 10 Black individuals in a Buffalo supermarket in 2022, as well as a shooting at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, where 10 people lost their lives.
