LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Police in Arkansas have confirmed that a fourth victim has tragically lost their life following a shooting at a grocery store. The incident also left nine others wounded and cars in the vicinity riddled with bullet holes as terrified bystanders sought refuge.
The Arkansas state police released a statement on Saturday evening announcing the death of the fourth victim, bringing the total number of individuals hit by gunfire to 14. Among those affected were 11 civilians, two law enforcement officers, and the suspected shooter.
The deceased have been identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Callie Weems, 23, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81, all of whom were civilians. The injured individuals, aged between 20 and 65, were being treated in hospitals, with four still in critical condition.
Suspect Identified and Arrested
The suspect has been named as Travis Eugene Posey, 44, from New Edinburg. Posey will face four counts of capital murder in connection with the incident. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries during an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement before being taken into custody and transferred to the Ouachita County Detention Center.
Authorities have yet to disclose a motive for the shooting. A media briefing is scheduled for Sunday afternoon to provide updates on the investigation.
Community in Shock
The shooting occurred at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a small city located 65 miles south of Little Rock. Roderick Rogers, a local council member, described the chaotic scene as people scrambled for safety, with some even fleeing to a nearby hospital for cover.
Distressing videos posted on social media captured the sound of gunshots and depicted scenes of panic and confusion. Multiple bullet holes were visible in the store’s windows, with spent shell casings scattered across the parking lot.
