LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — (AP) — Tragedy struck a community in Arkansas as a fourth victim has tragically passed away following a shooting at a local grocery store. The incident left nine others wounded and cars riddled with bullet holes, causing panic among bystanders who scrambled for cover.

According to Arkansas state police, the person succumbed to their injuries on Saturday evening, bringing the total number of gunshot victims to 14, including 11 civilians, two law enforcement officers, and the suspect.

The deceased individuals have been identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Callie Weems, 23, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81, all civilians. The wounded individuals, ranging in age from 20 to 65, include a woman who remains in critical condition.

Among the injured officers are Fordyce Police Officer James Johnson, 31, who has been discharged from the hospital, and Stuttgart Police Officer John Hudson, 24, whose injuries are reported to be minor.

The suspect, identified as Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg, will face four counts of capital murder. After exchanging gunfire with law enforcement, Posey was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is now in police custody at the Ouachita County Detention Center.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting. A media briefing is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday to provide updates on the investigation.

As of Friday, it was unclear whether Posey had legal representation. The Ouachita County Sheriff’s Office confirmed his detention but could not provide information on legal representation.

The shooting occurred at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a city located 65 miles south of Little Rock. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as people sought refuge from the gunfire, with some even running to a nearby hospital for safety.

Video footage from the scene captured the harrowing moments of the shooting, showing individuals taking cover and gunshots ringing out. Bullet holes in the store’s windows and shell casings scattered in the parking lot further highlighted the violence of the incident.

This tragic event adds to a string of mass shootings that have taken place in grocery stores, including the recent incidents in Buffalo, New York, and Boulder, Colorado, underscoring the urgent need for addressing gun violence in the community.
