LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas state police have confirmed that a fourth victim has tragically passed away following a shooting at a grocery store in the state. The incident left nine others injured as a shooter opened fire, causing chaos and panic among bystanders.

The latest fatality occurred on Saturday evening, with a total of 14 individuals being hit by gunfire. This number includes 11 civilians, two law enforcement officers, and the suspect.

The deceased have been identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Callie Weems, 23, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81, all of whom were civilians. The wounded individuals range in age from 20 to 65, with four still hospitalized, one of whom is in critical condition.

Suspect and Law Enforcement

The suspect in the shooting has been named as Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg. He will face four counts of capital murder. After exchanging gunfire with law enforcement, Posey was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and taken into police custody. He is currently being held at the Ouachita County Detention Center.

The two wounded law enforcement officers have been identified as Fordyce Police Officer James Johnson, 31, and Stuttgart Police Officer John Hudson, 24. Johnson has been released from the hospital, while Hudson’s injuries are reported to be minor.

Investigation and Motive

As of now, the police have not disclosed a motive for the shooting. A media briefing is scheduled for Sunday afternoon to provide an update on the investigation.

The shooting occurred at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a city located 65 miles south of Little Rock. Roderick Rogers, a member of the city council, described the chaotic scene as people fled for safety in all directions.

Previous Incidents

This tragic event is the latest in a series of mass shootings in grocery store settings. In 2022, a white supremacist killed 10 Black individuals at a supermarket in Buffalo. Just over a year prior, another shooting took place at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, claiming the lives of 10 people.
