On June 23, 25-year-old Morgan Tiara Smith, a resident of Morganton, found herself in hot water when she was arrested by Morganton Public Safety Officers. Smith faces multiple charges, including felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession of a schedule VI controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane control.
The arrest stemmed from a motor vehicle crash with injuries that occurred around 12:15 a.m. at 1301 East Union Street. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a heavily damaged vehicle that had collided with a building at the address. Emergency personnel had to extract Smith from the vehicle before transporting her to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Following an investigation into the crash, Smith was formally charged with the aforementioned offences. City officials who responded to the scene deemed the building unsafe to enter due to the extent of the damage caused by the collision. Speed and the influence of impairing substances were suspected to be contributing factors to the crash.
As of now, Smith is not listed as an inmate in Burke County. Her first court appearance is scheduled for September 20. The Morganton Department of Public Safety provided the information and photos related to the incident.
