Accident – Death – Obituary News : A resident of Florence has been taken into custody on multiple charges, including sodomy and assault, in connection with a break-in at a residence on Howell Street.

Reports from the Florence Police Department indicate that officers were dispatched to the scene of a reported burglary at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival, they discovered two elderly women inside the home, both of whom had sustained various injuries. Immediate medical assistance was provided to the victims at the scene.

One of the victims, aged 79, was subsequently airlifted to UAB Hospital by AirEvac for further treatment, while the other victim, aged 76, was transported to North Alabama Medical Center. Both individuals remain under medical care.

The suspect was identified through doorbell camera footage that captured him leaving the vicinity of the crime scene. Michael Joe Kirkland, Jr., a 34-year-old resident of Florence, was apprehended after incriminating evidence was recovered linking him to the incident.

Kirkland now faces charges of burglary, sodomy, robbery, and assault in connection with the case. Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation, and additional charges are expected to be brought against the suspect.

Currently, Kirkland is being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Center without the option of bail, pending an Aniah’s Law hearing. The authorities are working diligently to ensure that justice is served in this matter..
