Accident – Death – Obituary News : A resident of Florence has been taken into custody on various charges, including sodomy and assault, in connection with a break-in at a residence on Howell Street.
The Florence Police Department received a report of a burglary at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, where they discovered two elderly women inside the home with multiple injuries. Immediate medical assistance was provided to the victims at the scene.
One of the victims, aged 79, was airlifted to UAB Hospital by AirEvac, while the other victim, aged 76, was taken to North Alabama Medical Center. Both individuals are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
Through doorbell surveillance footage showing the suspect leaving the area, law enforcement was able to identify the perpetrator. Michael Joe Kirkland, Jr., a 34-year-old resident of Florence, was implicated in the crime based on evidence recovered from the scene.
Kirkland has been charged with burglary, sodomy, robbery, and assault. The authorities are conducting an ongoing investigation, and additional charges are expected to be filed in due course.
At present, Kirkland is being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Center without the option for bail, pending a hearing under Aniah’s Law..
