In a shocking incident in Texas, a woman has been charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child after attempting to drown a 3-year-old child at an apartment complex pool. The woman, identified as Elizabeth Wolf, 42, made racial statements during the incident, according to police reports.
The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has identified the family involved as Muslim and Palestinian. The organization has called for state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident as a hate crime and ensure the safety of the Muslim family and community.
On May 19, officers from the Euless Police Department responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex pool. Witnesses reported that a heavily intoxicated woman, later identified as Elizabeth Wolf, had tried to drown a child and had a confrontation with the child’s mother.
Upon questioning the mother, Wolf made derogatory remarks about her ethnicity and questioned her American citizenship. The mother, visibly Muslim and wearing a hijab and modest swimwear, recounted how Wolf tried to grab her 6-year-old son before forcibly submerging her 3-year-old daughter underwater.
The mother managed to rescue her daughter from the water, but the child was left traumatised by the incident. Both children were examined by medical personnel and cleared of any injuries.
The Euless Police Department confirmed that Elizabeth Wolf has posted bail following her arrest. She faces charges of attempted capital murder and injury to a child, with bail set at $25,000 and $15,000, respectively.
In response to the incident, Texas Rep. Salman Bhojani expressed shock and dismay, condemning the racist and Islamophobic nature of the attack. He reassured the affected family of his support and vowed to combat hate in the community.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has called for a hate-crime investigation into the incident, along with increased bail for the accused and a dialogue with officials to address rising Islamophobia and anti-Arab sentiments.
