A woman in Texas has been charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child after trying to drown a 3-year-old child at an apartment complex pool and making racial statements, according to police.
The incident, which took place on May 19 at an apartment complex pool in Euless, Texas, involved a woman named Elizabeth Wolf, 42, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time. Witnesses reported that Wolf had tried to drown the child and had a confrontation with the child’s mother, who was visibly Muslim and wore a hijab and modest swimwear.
According to the Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the family involved in the incident is Muslim and Palestinian. The organisation has called for state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident as a hate crime and ensure the safety of the Muslim family and community.
When the mother of the children, identified as Mrs. H, was questioned by Wolf about her nationality and the children she was with, Wolf allegedly made racial statements and attempted to grab the children. She forcibly submerged the 3-year-old daughter underwater, causing the mother to intervene and rescue the child.
The mother expressed her fear and trauma following the incident, stating that her daughter is now afraid and hides whenever the apartment door is opened, fearing that Wolf may return to harm her again.
After the incident, Wolf was arrested by the Euless Police Department for public intoxication and charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child. She posted bail from Tarrant County Jail, with bonds set at $25,000 for the attempted murder charge and $15,000 for the injury to a child charge.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has called for a hate crime probe, higher bail bond, and open dialogue with officials to address the rise in Islamophobia and anti-Arab sentiment. Texas Rep. Salman Bhojani has also condemned the incident and offered support to the affected family.
It remains unclear whether Wolf has legal representation at this time. The Euless Police Department has confirmed the details of the incident and the charges brought against Wolf.
