A woman in Texas is facing charges of attempted capital murder and injury to a child after allegedly trying to drown a three-year-old at an apartment complex pool and making racial statements, according to police.
The incident occurred on May 19, when officers from the Euless Police Department responded to a disturbance at the pool involving two women. Witnesses reported that a woman, later identified as Elizabeth Wolf, who was intoxicated, attempted to drown a child and got into an argument with the child’s mother.
The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) identified the family as Muslim and Palestinian and called for state and federal authorities to investigate the incident as a hate crime. They urged authorities to take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the Muslim family and community.
Details of the Incident
According to the victim’s mother, Wolf approached her at the pool, questioned her nationality, and made racial remarks about her not being American. The mother, who was visibly Muslim and wearing a hijab, tried to protect her children from Wolf’s aggression.
Wolf allegedly tried to grab the mother’s six-year-old son, causing a scratch on his finger. She then forcibly submerged the three-year-old daughter underwater, prompting the mother to intervene and rescue her child. Both children were later examined by medics and cleared of any injuries.
The mother expressed her distress over the incident, stating, “We are American citizens, originally from Palestine, and I don’t know where to go to feel safe with my kids. My daughter is traumatised and fears for her life.”
Legal Proceedings
Elizabeth Wolf was arrested by the Euless Police Department and charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child. She posted bail from Tarrant County Jail, with a bond set at $US25,000 for the murder charge and $US15,000 for the injury charge.
It is unclear whether Wolf has legal representation at this time. The local community leader, Shaimaa Zayan, is advocating for the incident to be treated as a hate crime, calling for a thorough investigation and dialogue with officials to address the rise in Islamophobia and anti-Arab sentiment.
Texas Representative Salman Bhojani condemned the incident, stating, “Hate has no place in Euless, District 92, or anywhere in our great state.” He commended the swift action taken by the police and offered assistance to the affected family.
The case has sparked concerns about rising intolerance and discrimination, prompting calls for greater awareness and action to combat hate crimes in the community.
