(CNN) — A woman in Texas is facing charges of attempted capital murder and injury to a child after attempting to drown a 3-year-old child at an apartment complex pool and making racist remarks, according to authorities.
The incident, which took place in Euless, Texas, has sparked outrage among the Muslim and Palestinian communities. The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has called for a thorough investigation into the incident as a possible hate crime.
On the day of the incident, Euless Police Department officers responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex pool where witnesses reported a woman, later identified as Elizabeth Wolf, trying to drown a child and engaging in a heated argument with the child’s mother.
According to reports, Wolf, who appeared to be intoxicated, questioned the mother about her background and targeted the children because of their ethnicity. The mother, who was visibly Muslim and wore a hijab and modest swimwear, was subjected to racial slurs and derogatory remarks by Wolf.
Despite the mother’s attempts to protect her children, Wolf managed to grab the 3-year-old girl and force her underwater. The mother intervened and rescued her daughter, who was left traumatised by the incident.
Following the arrest of Elizabeth Wolf for public intoxication, she was charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child. The victim’s family has expressed fear and concern for their safety in the wake of this disturbing event.
Local officials, including Texas Rep. Salman Bhojani, have condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation into the matter. They have assured the affected family of their support and commitment to justice.
