Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A resident of Howell met a tragic end today after an incident at a popular privately-owned 7000-acre tract of land in Manchester, as confirmed by the local Police Department.

The deceased has been identified as Edwin Toro-Mejia, a 33-year-old man from Howell Township.

According to the authorities, Edwin Toro-Mejia and a juvenile family member ventured onto the Heritage Mineral property, where they attempted to swim in Crystal Lake with a group of individuals at around 09:30 am. Unfortunately, Toro-Mejia encountered a muscle cramp in his leg while crossing the lake and got into distress about thirty yards away from the shore. Despite efforts from family members to assist him, Toro-Mejia ultimately submerged underwater and was unable to be rescued in time.

Upon receiving the emergency call, the Manchester Township Police Department swiftly responded to the scene, with the aid of multiple local and volunteer fire departments, search and rescue squads, as well as the New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit. After an hour and a half of search and rescue operations, Toro-Mejia was located unresponsive and subsequently pronounced deceased. The preliminary investigation has indicated that the drowning was accidental in nature.

Reminder on Private Property

The Manchester Township Police Department has issued a reminder to the public regarding the Heritage Minerals or “ASARCO” site, stressing that it is private property and strictly off-limits for recreational or any other purposes. Trespassing on the property is considered a criminal offense, and individuals found in violation may face significant fines and penalties, including potential incarceration. To ensure public safety, the Police Department urges everyone to respect and obey the “No Trespassing” signs posted at the site.

Assisting in the ongoing investigation are the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Investigation Unit and the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office. Anyone who witnessed the incident at Crystal Lake is urged to come forward and provide information to Detective Richard Jupinka of the Manchester Township Police Department’s Investigations Bureau at 732-657-2009 ext. 4206.

Notably, this unfortunate incident is not the first of its kind to occur at the Heritage Mineral property. In previous years, similar tragedies have unfolded, with individuals losing their lives in water-related accidents at the site. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by trespassing on private land and engaging in risky activities without proper authorization and supervision.
