Donald Trump told a group of evangelicals they “cannot afford to sit on the sidelines” of the 2024 election, imploring them at one point to “go and vote, Christians, please!”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump told a group of evangelicals they “cannot afford to sit on the sidelines” of the 2024 election, urging them to actively participate in the political process.

During his address to a gathering of politically influential evangelical Christians in Washington on Saturday, Trump expressed his support for displaying the Ten Commandments in schools and other public spaces. He received applause when referencing a new law in Louisiana that mandates the display of the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom.

“The significance of the ‘Thou shalt not steal’ commandment is truly remarkable. It’s essential that we uphold these values in our society,” Trump stated at the Faith & Freedom Coalition event. “There are those who oppose the display of such moral guidelines, but it is imperative in our increasingly chaotic world.”

Prior to the event, Trump took to social media to express his endorsement of the Ten Commandments being displayed in various settings. He emphasised the importance of these moral principles in shaping a strong societal foundation.

As the presumptive Republican presidential nominee for the 2024 election, Trump aims to mobilise his supporters within the religious right community, which has stood by him despite challenges. This loyal support has continued even after his recent conviction in a legal case related to hush money payments.

While Trump’s stance on a nationwide ban on abortion may differ from some evangelical beliefs, his role in appointing Supreme Court justices who have influenced abortion rights has solidified his support within the evangelical movement.

Addressing the crowd, Trump acknowledged the impact of his judiciary appointments on abortion legislation, stating, “We have achieved remarkable progress in this area, but ultimately, the decision lies with the individuals and states.”

Despite his achievements in certain policy areas, Trump has been cautious in clarifying his position on a national abortion ban, citing the complexities and political sensitivities surrounding the issue.

Attendees at the Faith & Freedom Coalition event expressed their unwavering support for Trump, recognising the importance of aligning with his broader policy agenda even if there are differences on specific issues like abortion.

“While a national ban on abortion would be ideal, respecting the state’s autonomy in decision-making is crucial,” remarked Jerri Dickinson, a retired social worker and Faith & Freedom member.

According to recent polling data, a majority of Americans believe that abortion should be legally permissible, reflecting the diverse perspectives on this contentious issue.

Looking ahead to the 2024 election, the Faith & Freedom Coalition is actively engaging in voter mobilisation efforts, aiming to rally support for Trump and other Republican candidates through grassroots campaigns.

Trump’s recent rally in Philadelphia focused on addressing violent crime and law enforcement issues, underscoring his commitment to public safety initiatives.

Despite facing criticism from political opponents, Trump remains steadfast in his policy positions and continues to engage with diverse audiences across the country.
