Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Jacoud Borges family was among the families enjoying a pleasant Saturday at the Brooklands Plaza splash pad in Rochester Hills on June 15 when a gunman emerged from a vehicle and began shooting.

Carlos Jacoud Borges, 42, and Karina Jacoud Borges, 37, were the first to be targeted as they shielded their 6-year-old son, Luke, from the gunfire. According to a GoFundMe page set up by a close friend of the family and verified by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Carlos was shot in the knee and Karina was shot in the hand while protecting their son. Despite sustaining injuries, Luke escaped unharmed.

In total, nine people were wounded in the shooting, with three in critical condition. The couple underwent surgery for their injuries and were discharged from the hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, they are still recuperating from the physical and emotional trauma of the incident.

Another victim of the shooting was 78-year-old Richard Schumborg, who had taken his 8-year-old granddaughter to the splash pad that day. When the gunman opened fire, the granddaughter managed to hide in a bathroom with a friend, but Schumborg was not as fortunate. He was shot multiple times before the gunman ran out of ammunition and fled the scene.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard revealed that the gunman, identified as Michael William Nash, 42, had a history of mental illness. Nash was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home, where authorities discovered multiple firearms. Despite the arsenal of weapons found in Nash’s possession, law enforcement has not determined a motive for the shooting.

The community has rallied around the victims of the tragic incident, with several GoFundMe pages set up to support those affected. The Jacoud Borges family’s fundraising page can be found here, while Richard Schumborg’s page is available here. Additionally, there are fundraising efforts for other victims, including a husband and wife who shielded their children, a mother and her two young sons, and a mother who bravely protected her daughter during the shooting.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, the community is coming together to support the victims and their families during this difficult time..
