BIBB COUNTY, Ga. — A weekend outing turned tragic as two drownings occurred at the Ocmulgee River in Georgia, prompting a swift response from local authorities.

The first incident took place on Friday around 12:16 p.m. at the Ocmulgee River Riverwalk, where Bibb County deputies, firefighters, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources were called in to assist with a possible drowning.

Eyewitnesses reported that Billy Scott Carter, 33, was with children along the river trail when they decided to go for a swim. As some of the children began to struggle against the current, Carter bravely swam out to help them to safety. Tragically, Carter disappeared from view while attempting the rescue.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., rescue teams located Carter’s lifeless body. Despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, all the children involved in the incident were safely rescued and unharmed.

STAY INFORMED:

Later that same evening, at approximately 6 p.m., authorities responded to another drowning at Frank Amerson Park on Riverview Road at the Ocmulgee River. Witnesses recounted how Eddren Chester, 19, of Macon, went underwater and failed to resurface despite their efforts to assist him. After a second submersion, Chester could not be located.

The Macon-Bibb Fire Department dive team recovered Chester’s body, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In light of these tragic events, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources offers safety tips for swimmers:

  • Always swim with a companion and avoid swimming alone.
  • Know your swimming abilities and avoid exceeding them. Never feel pressured to keep up with stronger swimmers.
  • Only swim in designated supervised areas to mitigate risks of underwater hazards.
  • Respect “No Diving” signs to prevent headfirst injuries in shallow waters.
  • If you are not a strong swimmer, wear a life jacket for added safety.
  • Take advantage of life jacket borrowing programs at lakes if you do not have your own.
