The shooting took place on Friday evening in Budlong Woods on the North Side, where Gomez and two other teen boys were getting into a car on the 5600 block of North Rockwell Street. According to police reports, the teens were targeted by gunfire from a black SUV, which fled the scene after the shooting.

Gomez was shot in the back and was rushed to St. Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Another 16-year-old teen sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was in serious condition, while the third boy, also 16, was shot in the knee and was in fair condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital.

Tragically, less than 24 hours later, another 16-year-old CPS student, Marvel White, was shot and killed in Englewood on the city’s South Side. The incident occurred in a park following a verbal altercation, where White was shot in the chest and legs. Despite being taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, he was pronounced dead.

The shootings have sparked an investigation, with no suspects in custody at this time. The community is reeling from the loss of two young lives in such a short period. Principal Kristi Eiler of Amundsen High School expressed her condolences in an email to students and families, describing Gomez as a valued member of the school community.

In response to the tragic events, Alderman Vasquez has pledged to increase patrols in the area and provide additional support to the 20th District. He is also working on implementing License Plate Reader cameras in the neighborhood to enhance security measures.

The community has come together to support the families of the victims, with a GoFundMe fundraiser set up to cover funeral expenses for Gomez. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming, with donations exceeding $16,000 towards a $20,000 goal.

As the investigations continue, anyone with information about the shootings is urged to submit tips anonymously online.
