The U.S. Coast Guard has officially ended the search for two teenagers who went missing while swimming near Jacob Riis Park on Friday, June 21.
After 24 hours of searching across a vast area spanning 600 square miles from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Long Beach, New York, the search was suspended. As of Saturday, June 22, both teens remain missing.
Captain Jonathan Andrechik, commander of Coast Guard Sector New York, expressed the difficulty of suspending the search, stating, “The decision to suspend a search is always difficult and weighs heavily on all involved. Our crews, along with our partner agencies, have conducted an exhaustive search, and our thoughts remain with the families during this difficult time.”
One of the missing teens has been identified as 16-year-old Elyjha Chandler from Brooklyn. The second teen, identified only as a 17-year-old named Christian, remains missing according to police reports.
Earlier today, Aminatu Noah, Elyjha’s mother, made a heartfelt plea for prayers during a Facebook livestream.
In tears, Noah said, “If you’re watching, please pray for my son. If there’s anything…Lord, please take me and leave him. Spare him. Please find him and spare him.”
Elyjha’s father, Urshell Chandler, recounted the events leading up to his son’s disappearance, mentioning that Elyjha entered the water at around 6:35 p.m. on Friday, June 21. He and another boy were swept under the water, with a bystander trying to rescue Elyjha. Despite surfacing multiple times, Elyjha went underwater once more and did not resurface.
Chandler shared, “He wasn’t far out in the water. One of the boys told me when the water hit them, it was like a demon coming at them,” in an interview with the New York Post.
