Accident – Death – Obituary News : YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown community is mourning the loss of William “Shimmie” Miller, a man who dedicated his life to transforming his past and uplifting those around him. Miller, who had a troubled past that led to a lengthy prison sentence, was released in June 2019 with a newfound mission to make a positive impact on his community.

Miller’s sister, Michelle Drummond, shared fond memories of her brother, describing him as a vibrant and big-hearted person. Despite the challenges he faced, Miller was determined to make a difference. He connected with Dionne Dowdy-Lacey, a community engagement specialist, and together they organized various events to combat violence and provide support to underprivileged children.

Through his organization, Will RESPECT INC., Miller launched initiatives like the RESPECT Basketball League and “From Beefin to Brotherhood,” which aimed to empower young men of color and promote unity in the community. He also collaborated with local leaders like William “Guy” Burney and Rev. Lewis Macklin to mentor youth and advocate for nonviolence.

Tragically, Miller’s life was cut short when he was fatally shot in his neighborhood. The news sent shockwaves through the community, leaving his loved ones and colleagues grappling with grief and disbelief. Burney, who considered Miller a mentor and partner in their nonviolence efforts, emphasized the impact of Miller’s legacy and urged others to continue his work.

In the wake of Miller’s death, the community is rallying together to seek justice and address the root causes of violence. Crime Stoppers of the Mahoning Valley has offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for Miller’s murder. Additionally, services for Miller will be held at Victory Church, allowing friends and supporters to pay their respects and honor his memory.

As Youngstown mourns the loss of a dedicated community leader, the call to action remains clear: to carry forth Miller’s vision of unity, empowerment, and nonviolence. In the face of tragedy, the community is coming together to support one another and strive for a brighter future.
