In a heart-wrenching incident that sheds light on the negligence of contractors and officials in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), a five-year-old boy tragically lost his life after falling into an uncovered water-filled pit at a construction site earmarked for a bio-gas plant in Kashimira.
The incident occurred behind the Jijamata Municipal Garden in the Penkarpada area of Kashimira on Friday evening. The young victim, Shreyansh Monu Soni, lived with his parents, paternal uncle, aunt, and cousins in Jai Ambe Nagar, Shiv Shakthi Nagar area of Penkarpada. His father operates a pan-stall in Dadar.
After returning from school in the afternoon, the five-year-old ventured out to play in the garden around 4 pm. Concern grew as he did not return home, prompting his family and neighbours to search for him. Tragically, they discovered him in the water-filled pit at the MBMC construction site.
Emergency services retrieved Shreyansh from the pit and rushed him to the civil hospital in Bhayandar, where he was pronounced dead-on-arrival at approximately 9 pm. It was revealed that the child had slipped into the pit while trying to retrieve his ball.
The Kashimira police have registered a case under section 304 (a) of the IPC for negligence leading to death. Authorities are currently investigating and reviewing documents to determine the involvement of the responsible civic officials, supervisors, and the contracting agency. Action will be taken against those found culpable.
Local residents noted that the construction site had been inactive for several months, with the unguarded pit lacking proper safety measures to prevent such tragic accidents. The community, including the grieving parents of the deceased child, former municipal corporator Anita Patil, and residents, demand accountability and strict action against those responsible.
The parents initially hesitated to claim their son’s body for the final rites, but eventually agreed following police intervention and the filing of an FIR, ensuring a thorough investigation into the tragic incident.
