COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the Connecticut man allegedly involved in a hit-and-run incident that left a police officer injured in Coventry has voluntarily surrendered himself to authorities.
identified as Ryland Roy, a 19-year-old resident of Thompson, the suspect is accused of striking an officer with his vehicle on the Coventry Greenway, also known as the Trestle Trail.
Responding to a call on Tuesday evening, officers arrived at the Coventry Greenway to disperse a gathering near the Old Rail Bridge.
According to Coventry Police, as the officers approached the gathering, a vehicle attempted to flee the scene. The driver, later identified as Ryland Roy, allegedly hit one of the officers before fleeing towards the Connecticut state line.
Roy was apprehended in Connecticut on Wednesday as a fugitive from justice. Subsequently, he posted bail and reportedly turned himself in at the Coventry Police Department, as confirmed by Captain Ryan DeSisto.
DeSisto revealed that Roy is facing charges of felony assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, driving recklessly, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily harm. Following an appearance in court on Friday morning, Roy was granted a $5,000 surety bail.
Official court documents indicate that Roy, who resides just across the state border, was granted permission to leave Rhode Island. His next court appearance has been scheduled for August 19.
However, this hit-and-run incident is not the only one currently under investigation by the Coventry Police Department. Earlier this month, two firefighters were struck and injured by a vehicle while attending to a medical emergency on Victory Highway.
In light of these ongoing investigations, authorities are now offering a £1,000 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the identification and conviction of the individual responsible for the hit-and-run involving the firefighters.
