Donald Trump to Address Evangelicals on Abortion Stance

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak to a group of politically influential evangelicals this Saturday, where he is expected to address his stance on abortion. The group, fiercely supportive of Trump, is urging him to promise more action to restrict abortion rights.

Despite nominating three Supreme Court justices who have overturned abortion rights, Trump has been hesitant to support a nationwide ban on abortion. This has caused some tension within the evangelical movement, a key demographic for Trump’s voter turnout in the upcoming election against Democratic President Joe Biden.

Ralph Reed, founder and chairman of the Faith & Freedom Coalition hosting the event, expressed the desire for a federal ban on abortion and called for Republican officials to be vocal about their pro-life views. However, Reed believes that Trump’s credibility on the issue will not be diminished among evangelical voters.

Voices from the Event

Attendees at the event shared mixed views on Trump’s stance on abortion. Jerri Dickinson, a retired social worker from New Jersey, expressed a preference for a national ban on abortion but acknowledged the importance of states’ rights in the decision. John Pudner, who leads a Faith & Freedom chapter in Wisconsin, stated that while some in the pro-life movement wish Trump would take a stronger stance, they appreciate his Supreme Court appointments.

Support Among Evangelical Voters

According to AP VoteCast, a survey of the electorate, around 8 in 10 white evangelical Christian voters supported Trump in the 2020 election. This demographic played a significant role in Trump’s victory, making up about 20% of the overall electorate.

Reed’s coalition is gearing up to mobilize support for Trump and other Republicans in battleground states, with plans to engage volunteers and paid workers for door-to-door campaigning.

Trump’s Evolving Position

While Trump takes credit for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, he has been cautious in his public statements about a nationwide ban on abortion. Last year, he emphasized the federal government’s role in protecting unborn life but did not provide specifics. In April of this year, Trump indicated that the abortion issue should be left to the states and stated that he would not sign a nationwide ban if passed by Congress.

Despite initial reluctance from evangelical voters in 2016, Trump’s promises to appoint pro-life justices and his selection of Mike Pence as his running mate helped secure support from the evangelical community.

Future Plans and Potential Running Mates

Several Republicans seen as potential running mates for Trump, including Rep. Elise Stefanik, Ben Carson, and Senate candidate Kari Lake, are also speaking at the conference. Reed mentioned that the coalition is looking for a champion who shares their values to support Trump in the upcoming election.

Later on Saturday, Trump is scheduled to hold an evening rally in Philadelphia.
