BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The man accused of committing a racially motivated assault against a child in Bellingham has entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment in Whatcom County Superior Court.

42-year-old Paul Bittner faced charges on Friday for allegedly assaulting an 11-year-old Black student from Whatcom Middle School. The incident occurred during a field trip when Bittner, a white male, reportedly punched the child in the face, causing a fractured tooth and a nose injury. Following the physical assault, he proceeded to make racially charged remarks towards the student.

The assault took place in close proximity to the Bellingham Police Department, where Bittner was subsequently detained. During his interaction with law enforcement, he continued to use derogatory language towards African Americans.

Charges against Bittner include the commission of a hate crime, classified as a class-C Felony, and 2nd-degree assault with substantial bodily harm, categorized as a class-B Felony. A status hearing for Bittner is scheduled for July 17, and he remains in custody at the Whatcom County Jail on a bail amount of $500,000.

The reprehensible attack has sparked outrage among city leaders, who have swiftly condemned the incident and urged members of the public to report any instances of bias or discrimination within the community.
