Nachyla Halton pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of 19-year-old Jazmine Chester.

In a recent development in the case of the 2022 southwest Columbus murder, Nachyla Halton, 20, has been sentenced to a minimum of 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. The plea also includes a three-year firearm specification. This decision comes after Halton’s involvement in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jazmine Chester, whose body was discovered on May 27, 2022, during a wellness check at her Wedgewood Village Apartment on Briggs Road in the Holly Hill neighborhood.

The Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Chester died from a gunshot wound to the face, prompting the investigation and subsequent arrest of Halton. The wellness check was initiated after Chester had not been heard from in eight days, with the last sighting of her entering her apartment in the early hours of May 19 with an unidentified individual, later identified as Halton.

Halton was questioned by authorities while in custody at the Cuyahoga County Jail on unrelated weapons charges. Initially denying her presence in Columbus during the time of the incident, Halton eventually confessed to knowing Chester by first name only. However, police were able to link Halton to the vehicle seen leaving the apartment, leading to her escape to the Cleveland area and subsequent arrest on murder charges.

Following her guilty plea, Judge Bill Sperlazza of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas sentenced Halton to serve between 14 and 19½ years in prison, a term agreed upon by both the prosecution and Halton’s defense attorney. This decision marks a significant step towards justice for the family and loved ones of Jazmine Chester.
