ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is set to make his highly anticipated season debut on Sunday for the Texas Rangers as they face off against the Kansas City Royals.

Scherzer, who last pitched for the Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series last year, has been sidelined due to a series of injuries. After undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back during the offseason, he faced further setbacks with right thumb soreness that was later diagnosed as a nerve issue extending to his right triceps.

Expressing his excitement for his return, Scherzer stated, “I’ve been looking to get out here for the past six weeks. I can’t wait. Just chomping at the bit to get out there.”

His comeback coincides with the Rangers’ series against the New York Mets, the team that traded Scherzer to Texas last year, adding an extra layer of significance to his return.

Despite his setbacks, Scherzer, who will turn 40 on July 27, showed promise in his rehab outings for Triple-A Round Rock, where he struck out 17 batters and posted a 4.91 ERA in three starts. However, the nerve issue forced him to delay his return until now.

Speaking about the delay, Scherzer said, “I wanted to let that completely get out of the system, get my thumb and hand back in position. Because we know when you lose grip strength that’s kind of a precursor before bad things happen.”

In his final rehab start, Scherzer demonstrated his readiness by striking out eight batters in 4 2/3 innings while allowing four hits and three runs. His performance showed promise as he threw 55 of his 79 pitches for strikes.

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that there will be no strict pitch count on Scherzer, stating, “We’ll watch the game and see how he feels every inning. He’s been stretched out. We’re not going to put a limit on him.”

Following the trade last summer, Scherzer made a strong impact for the Rangers, going 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts before being sidelined by a muscle strain in his shoulder. He returned to make two starts in the American League Championship Series and Game 3 of the World Series before exiting early due to his back issues.

With impressive career stats including 3,367 strikeouts, 214 wins, and 448 games started, Scherzer is ranked second among active pitchers in each of these categories, just behind Justin Verlander.

Reflecting on his journey back to the mound, Scherzer acknowledged the challenges he faced with the nerve problem, stating, “This nerve stuff can be long-term damage and what it does to your arm. I’ve been dealing with this thumb stuff, and I’ve been doing it for a year and would like to see some resolutions about it, but it is what it is.”

As Scherzer prepares to make his season debut, fans are eager to see the veteran pitcher back in action and contributing to the Rangers’ success on the field.
