ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is ready to take the mound for the Texas Rangers in his season debut on Sunday against the Kansas City Royals.
Scherzer, who last pitched for the Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series, underwent surgery in the offseason to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. He faced additional challenges during his rehab this season, including right thumb soreness that was diagnosed as a nerve issue extending to his right triceps.
“I’ve been eager to get back out there for the past six weeks,” Scherzer expressed before Saturday’s game. “I can’t wait. Just chomping at the bit to get out there.”
His return to the Rangers comes after hosting the New York Mets earlier this week, the team that traded Scherzer to Texas last year.
Scherzer, who will celebrate his 40th birthday on July 27, recorded 17 strikeouts and a 4.91 ERA in three rehab starts for Triple-A Round Rock. Despite some setbacks with his pitching grip, Scherzer is determined to stay healthy and compete at his best.
Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that there will be no specific pitch count for Scherzer, as they will monitor his performance and well-being throughout the game.
After the trade last summer, Scherzer posted a 3.20 ERA in eight starts for Texas before being sidelined by a muscle strain in his shoulder. He made a comeback during the American League Championship Series and the World Series, where he exited early due to his back issues.
With 3,367 strikeouts, 214 wins, and 448 games started, Scherzer ranks second among active pitchers, trailing only Justin Verlander in each category.
Reflecting on his rehab journey, Scherzer acknowledged the challenges posed by the nerve problem and expressed his desire for a resolution to the ongoing thumb issues.
