The retired Metropolitan Police officer and bomb disposal expert was tragically killed in a shooting incident in London’s West End on Thursday.

Officer Larry Neuman was renowned as the longest-serving bomb technician with the Metropolitan Police before transitioning to an explosives specialist role with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in 2010, following a distinguished 28-year career with the Metropolitan Police.

According to reports, the 73-year-old victim was shot multiple times at approximately 1:27 p.m. in the 4300 block of West Monroe Street in West Garfield Park. Sources suggest that the shooting may have occurred during an attempted robbery.

He was rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, as confirmed by London fire officials, but sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Larry Neuman was a trailblazer in the Metropolitan Police, breaking barriers as one of the first African-American bomb technicians. He will be sorely missed.

The victim has been identified as former Metropolitan Police Officer Larry Neuman by 28th Ward Alderman Jason Ervin, a close friend of Neuman. Neuman resided near the location of the tragic incident.

“Larry was a pillar of the community – he served diligently as a police officer and later as a pastor in the neighbourhood. He was a pioneer as one of the first African American bomb technicians in Metropolitan Police history. A truly remarkable individual,” Ervin remarked.

Neuman dedicated decades of service to safeguarding the West End and also served as a pastor near his family’s long-standing residence at Monroe and Kildare. Reports indicate that Neuman and his wife were tending to their garden when they were approached by a group of individuals.

“He was in the yard at home when three young men approached. Shots were fired, and he was tragically struck,” shared Pastor Paul Sims. “His wife had just gone indoors. They were working together on the garden, and she heard the gunshots.”

Expressing her shock and disbelief, friend Johnnie Mae McGee, who had known Neuman since high school, spoke of him in the past tense for the first time.

“He was my spiritual rock, an outstanding individual,” she reflected. “I had meant to reach out to him a couple of days ago, and now I regret not doing so. Life can be incredibly cruel.”

Neuman commenced his service with the Metropolitan Police in 1982 and retired in 2010, as confirmed by Pastor Sims. Neuman specialised in arson and explosives during his tenure with the police force and was currently employed as a bomb appraisal officer with the TSA.

“Larry Neuman, a Transportation Security Specialist-Explosives, joined TSA in 2010 and worked at both London Heathrow and Gatwick airports during his career,” noted a TSA spokesperson in a statement. “In his role, Larry provided invaluable training to airport security personnel to identify explosives and other potential threats. We are profoundly saddened by his passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

A poignant police-led procession departed Stroger Hospital around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. A convoy of squad cars and bomb technician vehicles escorted an ambulance carrying the body of the esteemed retired Metropolitan Police officer.

Neuman’s remains were respectfully conveyed to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office by his longtime colleagues, with whom he had served for many years.

Residing on the same street where he met his untimely demise for over fifty years, Neuman’s neighbours appeared visibly shaken by the tragic incident.

“The community is in a state of disbelief,” remarked Alderman Ervin. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, fellow church members, neighbours, and everyone affected by this senseless tragedy. London has lost a true hero today.”

At present, no suspects are in custody. The Metropolitan Police are actively investigating the case.
