Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Shocking scenes unfolded at a supermarket in Fordyce, Arkansas, on Friday as terrified grocery shoppers hid in freezers after gunshots erupted in a mass shooting. According to reports, a gunman opened fire just after 11.30 am at the Mad Butcher supermarket, resulting in three fatalities and 11 injuries. The suspected shooter, identified as Travis Posey, 44, is now in custody.

One of the shoppers caught in the chaos was Katrina Doherty, 39, who was at the supermarket with her 18-year-old daughter and four-year-old son when the gunfire began. Desperate to find a safe place to hide, they quickly sought refuge in a freezer, as reported by CNN. The sound of nine or 10 rounds of gunfire echoed through the store as they huddled together in fear.

Despite attempts to call 911, Doherty found herself without service, leaving her and other shoppers stranded in the cold confines of the freezer. Her young son began to cry, prompting Doherty to try and calm him down to avoid drawing attention to their hiding spot.

Time seemed to stand still as they remained in the freezer, with Doherty recalling the harrowing experience as feeling like an eternity. She turned to prayer for solace, seeking protection for everyone caught in the tragic event.

Small Town Shaken by Tragic Incident

The events at the Fordyce supermarket serve as a stark reminder that mass shootings can occur anywhere, even in small towns. Residents of Fordyce expressed shock and grief at the senseless act of violence that unfolded in their community.

Charise Ellson, a Fordyce resident, took to Facebook to share her thoughts, stating, “This is a small town and we personally know several people that were very nearby when the shooting took place. It’s just such a horrible thing that happened to people simply trying to grocery shop.”

Later on Friday, Arkansas State Police announced that Posey would face three counts of capital murder, with additional charges pending. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown at this time.

Victims Remembered

Two of the victims have been identified so far. Callie Weems, a 23-year-old nurse and mother to a 10-month-old baby, was tragically killed during the shooting. Her mother, Helen Browning, spoke to Fox 16, expressing her grief and questioning the senseless act of violence that took her daughter’s life.

Another victim, Shirley Kay Taylor, 63, was also fatally shot in the massacre. Her daughter, Angela Atchley, remembered her as a great woman who didn’t deserve such a tragic end.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the shooting, the injured victims range from non-life threatening to critically critical conditions, as confirmed by the police.

Community in Mourning

The Fordyce community has been left reeling from the tragic events that unfolded at the supermarket. Cory McMahon, a nurse practitioner, posted on Facebook, “Our own Callie Weems, LPN was taken from us, and our hearts are broken and lost right now.”

With emotions running high and questions left unanswered, the community waits for updates on the investigation and the justice that will follow.
