Gregory Eric Arner
A Chester resident, Gregory Eric Arner, aged 59, was apprehended late Thursday evening on charges of felony animal cruelty. The arrest came after a citizen reported witnessing Arner’s involvement in the death of a local cat.
Police Chief Chuck Stanley confirmed the arrest, stating that Arner was taken into custody around 3 a.m. on Friday at Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville. He was later arraigned via video link in Hancock County Magistrate Court on a single count of torture or killing an animal.
The incident unfolded when a concerned citizen, accompanied by her husband and stepdaughter, spotted a distressed cat in Arner’s yard on Neptune Street. The witness recounted on social media that Arner confessed to killing the cat due to his aversion to the smell of cat urine.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found the deceased cat in Arner’s yard. The animal was then handed over to a Hancock County humane agent for further investigation. An initial examination revealed visible injuries on the cat.
It remains unclear whether the cat was a stray or belonged to someone in the neighbourhood. Despite the shocking nature of the incident, Arner’s behaviour was described as uncharacteristic by the police, who knew him from his role as a substitute crossing guard at Allison Elementary School.
During his court appearance, a bail bond was posted on Arner’s behalf, securing his release from custody. If convicted, Arner could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of £5,000.
