A campaign group in north Pembrokeshire is actively opposing plans for a deep space radar dish array, which they describe as the United States’ attempt to dominate space. The group, known as PARC Against DARC, has managed to raise more than £1,000 to fund their efforts.
UK/US military plans for a Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC)
The UK/US military is proposing a 27-dish Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC) at Cawdor Barracks, Brawdy as part of the AUKUS security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The aim of the radar array is to track foreign countries’ communications and military satellites in space, allowing British, US, and Australian aircraft to destroy them with anti-satellite missiles.
Scoping report submitted to Pembrokeshire County Council
According to a scoping report submitted to Pembrokeshire County Council, the DARC radar array would track active satellites above the Earth. The Ministry of Defence has highlighted the importance of protecting the UK national interest in the Space Domain, which includes monitoring emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
Opposition to the DARC scheme
PARC Against DARC is strongly against the proposed radar array, calling it a “monument to the needless, sabre-rattling, expansionist vanity project.” The group was originally formed in the 90s when a similar radar installation was proposed in the area. They have launched a change.org petition and a crowdfunding page to gather support for their cause.
Public launch meeting
PARC Against DARC is hosting a public launch meeting at Solva Memorial Hall on June 27 at 7pm. The group is urging the community to come together to oppose the US’s attempt to colonise space without the consent of the people.
