A 39-year-old man from Tampa, described by police as a “habitual traffic offender,” was apprehended after crashing a stolen vehicle while attempting to evade law enforcement on Friday night, as per troopers.

The Lakeland Police Department reported that they were in pursuit of a 2004 Nissan Sentra that had been reported stolen by the Tampa Police Department.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a trooper was monitoring I-4 in Hillsborough County when they received information about the stolen vehicle being chased by LPD around 9 p.m.

The Nissan passed the trooper at a high speed and continued to drive recklessly, reaching speeds over 110 MPH, according to FHP.

Troopers stated that when the car attempted to exit I-4 and merge onto I-75, the driver, later identified as Edwin Carrion-Andino, lost control of the vehicle and collided with another vehicle. Following the crash, Carrion-Andino fled on foot and ran into trees, disregarding commands from officials.

A K9 officer named Mako was deployed by a Lakeland Police Department officer, leading to the arrest of Carrion-Andino, as detailed in the arrest report.

Carrion-Andino exhibited signs of impairment and informed law enforcement that he had consumed marijuana and molly before driving. FHP revealed that his license had been suspended, and he was classified as a habitual traffic offender.

Authorities confirmed that Carrion-Andino was aware that the vehicle he was operating had been stolen.

Carrion-Andino is currently facing multiple charges, including resisting an officer without violence, offenses against police animals, grand theft of a motor vehicle, DUI with property damage or personal injury (second conviction), leaving the scene of a crash with injury, aggravated fleeing to elude, fleeing to elude at high speed, and driving while license revoked as a habitual offender.
