WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak Saturday to a group of politically influential evangelicals who strongly support him but are urging him to take a firmer stance on restricting abortion.
Despite Trump’s opposition to signing a nationwide ban on abortion and his reluctance to fully articulate his views on the issue, many members of the evangelical movement are pushing for more concrete promises from the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. This group is a crucial part of Trump’s base and is expected to play a significant role in mobilizing voters for his upcoming rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden.
While Trump has appointed three Supreme Court justices who have contributed to overturning certain abortion rights, he has expressed concerns that supporting a national ban could have negative political repercussions for Republicans. Recent polling by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicates that around two-thirds of Americans believe that abortion should generally be legal.
Evangelical Movement’s Perspective
Ralph Reed, the founder and chairman of the Faith & Freedom Coalition, the organization hosting Trump’s address, stated that members of his movement are advocating for a federal ban on abortion and are seeking elected officials who will boldly champion pro-life values. However, Reed believes that Trump’s current positions on the issue will not diminish his strong support among evangelical voters.
Attendees at the upcoming event shared mixed views on Trump’s stance. Jerri Dickinson, a retired social worker and Faith & Freedom member from New Jersey, expressed a preference for a national ban on abortion but acknowledged the constitutional complexities involved in leaving such decisions to individual states.
John Pudner, who recently established a Faith & Freedom chapter in Wisconsin, highlighted a desire within the pro-life movement for Trump to adopt a more unequivocal pro-life stance. However, he acknowledged that many appreciate Trump’s judicial appointments, which have been viewed positively within the pro-life community.
Support Within the Evangelical Community
According to AP VoteCast data, approximately 80% of white evangelical Christian voters supported Trump in the 2020 election, with nearly 40% of Trump voters identifying as white evangelical Christians. This demographic constituted around 20% of the overall electorate in that election.
Besides offering their support in the general election, Reed’s group intends to actively engage in voter turnout efforts for Trump and other Republican candidates. Their strategy involves deploying volunteers and paid workers to canvass millions of doors in battleground states.
Trump’s Evolving Position
While Trump has claimed credit for the reversal of Roe v. Wade, he has also cautioned that the abortion issue can be politically challenging for Republicans. For some time, he avoided clarifying his stance on a national ban on abortion.
Last year, during his address to Reed’s group, Trump emphasised the federal government’s role in protecting unborn life but refrained from providing detailed policy proposals. Subsequently, in April of this year, Trump indicated that he believed the issue should be decided at the state level. He later confirmed in an interview that he would not endorse a nationwide ban on abortion if passed by Congress.
Despite initial scepticism from some white evangelical Christians in 2016 due to Trump’s past statements on abortion, his subsequent commitments to appoint anti-abortion justices and his choice of evangelical running mate Mike Pence helped secure support from the evangelical community.
Looking Ahead
Several Republicans, including New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, former presidential candidate Ben Carson, and Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake, who are potential running mates for Trump, are also slated to speak at the conference. Reed indicated that his coalition is closely monitoring these individuals in search of a candidate who aligns with Trump’s values.
Later on Saturday, Trump is scheduled to hold an evening rally in Philadelphia.
