A 25-year-old software professional from Maharashtra’s Thane district has reportedly fallen victim to a “task fraud” scam, losing approximately Rs 40 lakh in the process, according to an official statement released on Saturday.
The incident, which took place between June 6 and June 16, involved the resident of Kalyan being duped by individuals who approached him with a part-time job opportunity that required him to rate hotels and restaurants online.
Initially, the victim received payments for completing these “tasks,” but soon found himself coerced into investing in schemes that promised high returns. Over a span of ten days, he ended up investing a total of Rs 40.4 lakh, as stated in the FIR.
It wasn’t until he failed to receive any returns on his investments despite repeated follow-ups that the man realised he had been swindled.
Following his complaint, the Kolsewadi police registered a case against two individuals, one of whom was identified as Avika Mishra, for perpetrating the fraud. Investigations are currently underway to locate and apprehend the alleged scammers, the official confirmed.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of fraudulent activities in the digital age, highlighting the importance of exercising caution and due diligence when presented with lucrative offers that seem too good to be true.
As the authorities work to bring the perpetrators to justice, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and sceptical of any unsolicited job offers or investment opportunities that come their way, in order to safeguard themselves against falling victim to similar scams.
