Accident – Death – Obituary News : An investigation into the fatal shooting of a man near the Vancouver waterfront on June 8 has revealed that the individual was wielding a modified cap gun at the time of the incident, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
The man, identified as 43-year-old Vadim Sashchenko, was shot and killed by a Vancouver police officer after allegedly pointing what appeared to be a firearm at the officer and his patrol vehicle. The events leading up to the shooting began when Vancouver police responded to a report of Sashchenko, accompanied by a German Shepherd that had reportedly bitten at least one person. Additionally, Sashchenko was described as being in possession of a firearm.
Upon locating Sashchenko and the dog near Columbia Avenue and Columbia Way, Officers Brandon Riedel and Stuart Drynan engaged with him. Dash camera footage from inside Riedel’s vehicle captured the moment when Sashchenko raised what appeared to be a gun and aimed it at Riedel and his vehicle. In response, Officer Riedel discharged his weapon, firing four shots as Sashchenko discarded the object in the street and fell to the ground, succumbing to his injuries.
Following the incident, investigators recovered the object Sashchenko was holding and determined it to be a modified cap gun. The replica lacked the orange tip typically found on such toys and had detached grips, indicating that it had been altered from its original design. The Southwest Washington Independent Investigative Response Team, under the supervision of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, is currently conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
