The tragic incident that occurred at Washington Park in Milwaukee during a Juneteenth evening event has left the community in shock. The victim, identified as 17-year-old Sherrone D. Thornton Jr., was fatally shot by another 17-year-old. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identity of the deceased.
During the event, which followed the daylong Juneteenth Peace Day celebration, a 15-year-old Milwaukee boy was also injured in the shooting. The suspect, a 17-year-old from Milwaukee, is currently in custody. Earlier in May, he had been charged with felon possession of a firearm and had posted $750 cash bail. The Sheriff’s Office is preparing to press charges against him in the coming days.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office reported that the shooting took place around 8:53 p.m. following a report of a potential altercation involving around 50 young people. Chief Deputy Daniel Hughes stated that law enforcement officials found the alleged shooter firing a weapon near the intersection of North 42nd Street and West Lloyd Street, towards the playground.
Tragically, Thornton sustained multiple gunshot wounds and despite efforts to save his life, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled his death a homicide.
