Authorities in Illinois are currently investigating a devastating collision that took place on Lake Marie earlier this week, involving a jet ski and a boat. The incident, which resulted in the tragic deaths of two teenage girls, has left the community in mourning.
According to a statement from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the marine unit was called to the scene of a collision between a jet ski and a boat on Tuesday evening. The jet ski, carrying 16-year-old Sarina Vootkur and 13-year-old Elle Kim, collided with a boat being operated by a 55-year-old man near the Gass Lake Channel.
Witnesses reported that the jet ski was travelling at a high speed towards the boat, and despite the man’s efforts to avoid the collision, the impact was unavoidable. Vootkur was operating the jet ski with Kim as her passenger at the time of the incident.
Although both girls were wearing life vests, they were knocked unconscious and thrown into the water upon impact. The four individuals on the boat acted swiftly, pulling the girls from the water, providing aid, and immediately contacting emergency services.
One of the girls was taken back to shore by the boat operator, while the other was assisted by a passing vessel. Tragically, despite the efforts of medical personnel, both girls were pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office determined that the teens succumbed to blunt force injuries sustained during the collision. The incident is currently under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois Conservation Police.
