Accident – Death – Obituary News :

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill has officially charged Raoul Bedoang, a 17-year-old from West Valley City, with first-degree murder in connection to a drive-by gang shooting that took place on May 30. The incident resulted in the death of Abdiaziz Abdirahman, one individual potentially facing paralysis, and two others sustaining injuries.

Bedoang is facing a total of 19 charges, including the first-degree murder charge related to the death of Abdirahman. The victim was found at the intersection of Birkhill Blvd. and Fireclay Ave. in Murray. It has been revealed that Bedoang is allegedly a member of the 4500 Block Gang, while Abdirahman was associated with a rival gang known as the Nig***s in Black gang (NIB).

Multiple Charges Against Bedoang

In addition to the first-degree murder charge, Bedoang is also facing one charge of retaliation against a witness, 12 charges of felony discharge of a firearm, and five charges of felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury.

It has been reported that the shots fired by Bedoang during the incident resulted in a 14-year-old being shot multiple times in the back, potentially leading to paralysis. Another victim, a 16-year-old, was shot in the index finger, while a fourth victim, an uninvolved bystander, was grazed by a bullet. Investigators were able to obtain footage of the alleged shooting.

Sequence of Events

According to a press release by Gill, a witness was approached by a group of individuals associated with NIB on May 30, inquiring about Bedoang’s whereabouts. The witness confirmed knowing Bedoang and later informed him about the group looking for him.

Later that day, Bedoang, accompanied by two other individuals, arrived at the witness’ residence. They requested a ride from the witness, stating their intention to play basketball with the individuals who had been inquiring about Bedoang. The witness agreed and drove the group around.

When they located the group in Murray, Bedoang, seated in the passenger seat of the witness’ car, allegedly opened fire with 18 bullets at the group in broad daylight. Abdirahman sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including two to the head, and subsequently passed away at a nearby hospital. Investigators recovered 18 empty 9mm casings at the scene.

Legal Proceedings and Statements

Following the shooting, the witness, who was driving, fled the scene, while Bedoang and his associates fled on foot. Before leaving, Bedoang reportedly warned the witness to remain silent, threatening consequences. The witness mentioned not recognising the other individuals with Bedoang, all of whom were dressed in black attire with ski masks.

Commenting on the case, Gill expressed, “This was a senseless, violent act that could have resulted in more casualties. This prosecution serves as a warning that such behaviour will be met with strong consequences. Our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Abdirahman and the other victims, and we hope that the charges brought forward will aid in their healing process.”

It is important to note that charges are allegations until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. All individuals arrested are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
