Reading police have apprehended a man for allegedly using a pickaxe to smash the pane glass front doors of two city convenience stores within a 30-minute timeframe. The incident was reportedly fueled by the man’s frustration over not having enough money to purchase cigarettes and gas.

The suspect, identified as Moises Samuyo Aguilera, aged 49 with no fixed address, was taken into custody and has been remanded to Berks County Prison in lieu of a total bail amounting to $10,000. He is set to await a hearing following his arraignment before District Judge Michael Kauffman at Reading Central Court on Tuesday night.

Samuyo Aguilera is facing several charges, including burglary, criminal trespassing, criminal mischief, and possessing an instrument of crime.

Incident Details

According to the police report, authorities received a call at 11:35 p.m. on Tuesday regarding a disturbance at Turkey Hill Minit Market located at 501 Spring St. An employee informed the police that a man was causing damage to the store’s windows.

The employee explained that the store doors were typically locked by 11 p.m., with transactions conducted through a window during overnight hours. Upon hearing loud banging noises followed by shattering glass, the employee immediately contacted the police and evacuated through an emergency exit.

Upon reviewing the store’s security camera footage, it was observed that the perpetrator, later identified as Samuyo Aguilera, arrived in a silver car and attempted to open the locked entrance doors. Failing in his initial attempt, he retrieved a pickaxe from the back of his vehicle and proceeded to break the glass door.

Inside the store, Samuyo Aguilera helped himself to two packs of cigarettes before leaving the scene.

Shortly after the incident at Turkey Hill, Officer Dylan Humlhanz was dispatched to another convenience store, Sunoco at 719 Spring St., for a similar disturbance involving a pickaxe. Upon arrival, he noticed a man resembling the suspect from the previous incident near the gas pumps.

The front glass doors of the Sunoco store were also found shattered, leading to the immediate arrest of Samuyo Aguilera.

During questioning, a store worker revealed that the suspect had initially visited the store around 10 p.m., claiming he needed gasoline for his car but did not have the funds to pay for it. Upon being denied fuel without payment, Samuyo Aguilera resorted to breaking the store’s glass doors with the pickaxe.

Upon searching the suspect’s vehicle, multiple pickaxes, garden tools, and industrial equipment were discovered on the back seat.

Following the series of events, Samuyo Aguilera is currently awaiting further legal proceedings as the investigation continues.
