The Intruder Toia

A 61-year-old man, identified as Mark Toia, caused a stir in the Howard Beach neighborhood of Queens, New York, when he entered a neighbor’s home brandishing an airsoft shotgun. The incident took place on Wednesday evening when the teenage girl and her 10-year-old brother were home alone, according to family members and law enforcement officials.

Toia, a resident of 135 Broadway, was later apprehended by the police. During the search of the neighbor’s home, authorities discovered two airsoft shotguns and a pipe containing what appeared to be crack residue. The police spokesperson confirmed these findings via email communication.

According to a family member’s account, Toia entered the Howard Beach residence around 4:30 pm. He reportedly confronted the 10-year-old boy as he made his way to the second floor. Subsequently, Toia entered the 17-year-old girl’s room and expressed his displeasure at being able to see her older brother from his own home.

The situation escalated when Toia claimed to have connections to the mafia and threatened to have the girl’s father, Chris Gounden, harmed. Despite the father not residing in the home, Toia made chilling remarks about his ability to cause harm. The family member also noted that Toia had a knife strapped to his left arm during the encounter.

Surveillance footage from the home captured Toia holding what appeared to be the airsoft shotgun, with wrappings on one arm, adding a chilling visual element to the incident.

The teenage girl and her younger brother were the sole occupants of the house at the time. The teenager promptly contacted their mother, who swiftly dialed 911 to seek assistance.

In a statement provided to Black Star News, a spokesperson from the New York Police Department disclosed that officers from the 106th precinct responded to the mother’s distress call around 4:35 pm on June 19. The caller, identified as Toia, had unlawfully entered the home armed with an airsoft shotgun and a knife, prompting the swift police response.

Subsequent investigations led to Toia’s arrest at his residence, where the authorities recovered the airsoft shotguns, knife, and a glass pipe containing suspected crack residue. He was taken into custody and faced a slew of charges, including criminal trespass, acting in a manner injurious to a child, menacing, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and harassment.

It is worth noting that Toia, who is of Caucasian descent, resides in close proximity to an ethnic Indian immigrant family from Guyana. The family had previously experienced racial hostility from their neighbours upon moving to Howard Beach, as highlighted in an article published by the Daily News on April 24, 2007, titled “Family Haunted by Hate in Queens.”

The children’s father, Gounden, recounted being forced out of the neighbourhood due to the persistent harassment and discrimination they faced.
