MIAMI — A tragic incident unfolded during a Pennsylvania family’s vacation in Florida, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of both parents in a rip current tragedy, as reported by investigators.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that two of the six children attempted to rescue their parents but were unable to withstand the force of the rapidly moving water.

The victims, identified as 51-year-old Brian Warter and 48-year-old Erica Wishard, tragically lost their lives in the incident.

The tragic event occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, off Hutchinson Island, located approximately 120 miles north of Miami.

According to the sheriff’s office, the family commenced their day at the beach as part of their Florida vacation. While in the water, the couple and two of their teenagers were swept away by a rip current.

Despite the valiant efforts of the children to assist their parents, the perilous conditions forced them to retreat to the shore.

Martin County Ocean Rescue swiftly responded, bringing the couple to shore and initiating life-saving procedures. Unfortunately, despite the medical intervention, the couple succumbed to the harrowing ordeal.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a Martin County Sheriff’s Crisis Intervention Team Deputy provided support to the children as they awaited the arrival of additional family members in Florida.

The family was swimming off Stuart Beach when the incident occurred, authorities confirmed.

Rip currents, which can reach speeds of up to 8 feet per second, pose a significant risk to beachgoers. The National Weather Service has attributed 11 drowning deaths in U.S. waters to rip currents so far this year.

NOAA Ocean Service defines rip currents as localized currents that flow from the shoreline towards the ocean, capable of rapidly carrying individuals away from the shore.
