PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — In a recent development, five individuals are facing charges for their alleged involvement in a conspiracy to smuggle drugs into the Multnomah County Detention Center, as announced by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.

The investigation into this case began in December 2023 when the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office alerted MCSO about suspicious activities involving a detainee, 30-year-old Levi Denison.

Subsequent monitoring of Denison’s phone calls by MCSO detectives revealed that he was in communication with another inmate, 33-year-old Shawn Mastne, as well as individuals outside the jail. The conversations indicated a plot to smuggle drugs, including methamphetamine, heroin, and buprenorphine, into the detention center.

identified as the accomplices outside the jail, Rain Vaday, 26, Shelby Steelman, 27, and Danielle Young, 44, were allegedly part of the drug smuggling conspiracy.

On March 14, Denison, Vaday, Mastne, Steelman, and Young were indicted on various charges, including conspiracy to supply contraband and conspiracy to unlawfully deliver controlled substances.

Mastne, in addition to the current charges, is also facing additional legal action related to a previous drug smuggling attempt into the jail, where deputies reportedly discovered over an ounce of methamphetamine in his possession. This incident dates back to last year, and Mastne was indicted in early February.

It is worth noting that the public disclosure of the recent indictment was delayed until all suspects were located and apprehended by authorities.
