A retired Chicago police officer, who was also an ordained minister and Transportation Security Administration explosives specialist, tragically lost his life on Thursday morning in West Garfield Park. The 73-year-old Larry Neuman was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 4300 block of West Monroe Street, according to authorities.

Neuman, a former bomb technician who retired in 2010 after serving 28 years with the Chicago Police Department, was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as a resident of West Garfield Park.

Following the shooting, a suspect was arrested at the scene and is currently being questioned by detectives, the Chicago police stated. The motive behind the tragic incident remains under investigation.

Legacy of Service and Community Impact

Throughout his career, Neuman dedicated himself to safeguarding the city of Chicago. After retiring from the police department, he joined the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) as an explosives specialist in 2010, working at O’Hare and Midway airports. Described as a “pillar” of the West Garfield Park community, Neuman was a beloved member of St. Michael Missionary Baptist Church for three decades. Pastor Paul Sims fondly remembered Neuman as a kind and generous individual who always went out of his way to help others.

Aside from his professional accomplishments, Neuman was also a veteran of the Marines who served during the Vietnam War. He was a devoted family man, cherished his grandchildren, and actively contributed to the church’s youth ministry.

Neuman’s untimely passing has deeply saddened his family, friends, and colleagues. The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation has announced a $25,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in connection with the case.
