LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The North Las Vegas Police Department recently made public the body-worn camera footage from an officer-involved shooting incident that involved police firing at an armed suspect a staggering 92 times.

Details of the Incident

The shooting incident occurred on June 15 at around 9 p.m. when officers responded to a four-vehicle crash at the intersection of Craig Road and North 5th Street.

According to witnesses, the driver of a silver car, later identified as Julian McCoy, 57, of Las Vegas, failed to obey a red light while travelling northbound on North 5th Street, resulting in a collision with vehicles on Craig Road. McCoy was reported to have brandished a loaded gun, threatening individuals, emergency responders, and law enforcement officers at the crash scene.

Surveillance footage obtained by detectives showed McCoy’s vehicle running the red light at a high speed, supporting witness statements regarding the events leading up to the shooting.

Escalating Tensions

Multiple calls to the NLVPD described McCoy as the instigator of the crash, armed with a gun, and making threats towards bystanders. Even North Las Vegas firefighters, upon arriving to provide assistance, reported being menaced by McCoy, who was still in possession of the firearm.

Upon the arrival of police officers, attempts were made to de-escalate the situation, with repeated commands for McCoy to drop the weapon and exit his vehicle. However, McCoy disregarded these instructions and reportedly aimed his gun at the officers, prompting their response.

Officer Response and Confrontation

Seven officers discharged their firearms, resulting in McCoy sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. The body cam footage captured the intense exchange, with a total of 92 shots being fired at McCoy during the confrontation.

Tragically, McCoy was pronounced dead at the scene. The officers recovered a 22-caliber rifle from McCoy’s car, loaded with 15 bullets, alongside alcohol and drug paraphernalia.

Officer Identification and Investigation

The seven officers involved in the shooting were identified by the NLVPD, and as per departmental protocol, they were placed on paid administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation.

Had McCoy survived, he would have faced serious charges including assault with a deadly weapon, DUI involving a collision, and possession of a firearm while under the influence. Police disclosed that McCoy’s toxicology screening revealed the presence of cocaine, fentanyl, ethynol, and methamphetamine in his system.

Criminal Background of McCoy

Records indicated that McCoy had a significant criminal history, including prior convictions for narcotics offences, conspiracy to commit 1st-degree murder, theft, and kidnapping. He was on probation in Nevada for a theft conviction and had a non-extraditable warrant for assault in Texas.

Aftermath and Injuries

Following the shooting, four individuals received treatment for minor injuries at the scene. Additionally, female passengers from one of the vehicles involved in the initial crash were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
